The Greek Workshop

The Greek Workshop, a tradition at UC Berkeley for over thirty years, is suited to the needs of students with no previous knowledge of Greek, but with some experience of other foreign languages. It is a serious commitment: in addition to six hours of class work every day, students are expected to spend several hours daily in study and homework preparation. The Workshop replaces more than two semesters of elementary and intermediate Greek. Normally the class covers during the first six weeks the grammar that will be needed for the readings later, using Hansen & Quinn. During the second half of the Workshop, students read various texts in the original. The goal is to prepare students for coping successfully with large portions of texts (a prerequisite for further Greek studies).

The Greek Workshop is offered in the 10-week summer session, from early to mid June to the middle of August or a little later. For the precise dates in any given year, please see the Summer Sessions site.

The Latin Workshop

The Latin Workshop, a tradition at UC Berkeley for almost forty years, is suited to the needs of students with no previous knowledge of Latin, but with some experience of other foreign languages. It is a serious commitment: in addition to six hours of class work every day, students are expected to spend several hours daily in study and homework preparation. The Workshop replaces more than two semesters of elementary and intermediate Latin. The first portion of course is devoted to the acquisition of grammar, syntax, and vocabulary through integrated readings; in the second part of the course students choose two out of four options for intensive reading (with commentaries). The goal is to prepare students for coping successfully with large portions of texts (a prerequisite for further Latin studies).

The Latin Workshop is offered in the 10-week summer session, from early to mid June to the middle of August or a little later. For the precise dates in any given year, please see the Summer Sessions site.
