Student Prizes and Awards

The Department awards a number of prizes funded by bequests, contributions in honor of retiring faculty, generous donors of endowments, and the annual fund. An award of a certificate and a cash prize to a graduating major with a highly distinguished record in work in the major.

Award funded by donations to the Chair's Annual Fund appeal, to a graduating major with a distinguished record who is continuing classical studies at the graduate level.

W. K. Pritchett Prize in Elementary Greek

Named in honor of Professor W. Kendrick Pritchett, a distinguished scholar and a devoted teacher of Greek, upon his retirement, a prize of at least $500 to the enrolled student who performs best in the first year of Greek.

Thomas G. Rosenmeyer Prize in Greek Composition

(formerly the Marianne McDonald Prize) Endowed by Marianne McDonald to encourage mastery of Greek at a high level, renamed in 2007 to honor Thomas G. Rosenmeyer (1920-2007), distinguished professor of Classics and Comparative Literature, a prize of at least $500 for the best translation into classical Greek of a passage of English selected by the judge.

Richardson Prize in Latin Composition

Established by will of Professor George M. Richardson, who died in 1896, a prize of at least $500 for the best translation into classical Latin of a passage of English selected by the judge.

J. K. Anderson Travel Award

Established with donations made in honor of Professor John K. Anderson upon his retirement, an award of at least $1500 to support an undergraduate in summer study and travel in classical lands.

Classics Summer Study Abroad Awards

Funded by a departmental endowment, an award to assist undergraduates participate in summer study programs abroad.

Corinne S. Crawford Graduate Research Award

Funded by an endowment for graduate support created as a memorial to Corinne S. Crawford (1980-2007), an outstanding graduate student who died tragically in a traffic accident, this award supports graduate research in Italy.

Outstanding GSI Awards

Awarded by Graduate Division on the recommendation of the Department to two or three GSIs teaching in the current academic year who have demonstrated excellence in teaching in a variety of classes.

Library Prize for Undergraduate Research

Awarded by the Library, this prize recognizes excellence in undergraduate research projects that show evidence of (1) significant inquiry using the library, its resources, and collections; (2) learning about the research and information-gathering process itself.
