In this course, we will read together selections of the Iliad in Greek and the entirety of the poem in English translation. We will improve our abilities in reading Greek and learn about the meter and distinctive language of Homeric poetry. Along the way, we will investigate some of the interpretive problems posed by the poem, and explore what the poem does with the questions of (among other things) justice, violence, gender, community, mortality, politics, emotion, and the place of human beings in the world. Our written assignments will include midterm and final exams, quizzes, and short interpretive papers. Completion of Greek 1 and 2 or their equivalent is a prerequisite of this course; completion of Greek 100 or its equivalent is recommended.
