The Language Majors
The department offers three language majors:
Classical Languages: Students gain competence in both ancient Greek and Latin and have the opportunity to read literary, philosophical, and historiographical texts in their original form.
Students may place out of the elementary language sequence(s) and (very rarely) Greek or Latin 100 by taking a placement exam. Students with strong scores in AP Latin frequently place into Latin 100 and gain 1 course/4 units of credit for placing out of Latin 1 and 2. Students who place out of Greek or Latin 100 must take one additional upper-division Greek or Latin course.
